We receive alot of questions and requests for allergy testing. There are alot of pharmacies and health food shops offering ‘allergy testing’ also.

In clinical medicine, the Gold Standard (that is the best and most accurate method) of diagnosing allergies is via a thorough clinical history, identification of the likely substance causing an allergic reaction and testing of this substance via skin prick tests. Generally skin prick tests are only available in a hospital environment and contraindicated in circumstances of anaphylaxis.

Blood (serum) IgE testing is also very accurate in detecting sensitivity to allergens, however positive results will not always correlate to an ‘allergic reaction’.

At Duality Health we offer testing for TOTAL IgE along with specific IgE test panels to a wide range of antigens.

Remember, in the absence of a strong clinical history, Specific IgE analysis is of little significance.

An example of accurate use of allergy testing is as follows:

Through the use of a diary it has been noted that every time an individual is at home they suffer symptoms of a runny nose, sneezing and an itchy throat. When they are away on holidays or at work they are well. They live in the country. They have cats and dogs and can’t tell what is causing the symptoms.

Via a profile of IgE testing for grasses (living in the country), cats, dogs and house dust they find strong IgE reactions to cat dander. Removal of cats from the home environment resolves their symptoms.  This is a solution.

Another example of beneficial use of IgE testing:

A teenager gets a rash randomly and upset bowel. After keeping a food diary they narrow it down to either dairy, eggs or peanuts that are causing the symptoms. They never specifically eat these on their own, but they are constituents of common ingredients in their regular meals/snacks. A combination food panel indicates high levels of IgE for egg. They remove this from their diet, the symptoms resolve. Success.

Poor use of an allergy profile:

A patient thinks they are allergic to something, but have not taken the time either by themselves or with a GP to consider what the cause might be. So they book a wide ranging allergy profile to check for ‘everything’. 5 items are returned with raised IgE levels.

Success? Unfortunately not.

IgE will be raised by any item that your body has taken a dislike to, but this doesn’t automatically mean that you have symptoms to these items, despite the raised IgE. For example, in an individual with no issues of allergy or sensitivity at all, you may find 10 items that result in raised IgE levels, but the individual has absolutely no symptoms from these items. So they have no need to avoid them.

Essentially, the use of IgE blood levels is great to prove or disprove your hypothesis of sensitivity to a number of allergens, but is not a useful ‘screening test’ to use without clinical thought or counsel.

This has been a waste of time and money for the patient
